Summer in Minnesota lake country

Summer in Minnesota lake country

Minnesota Summer Squall

Have you made note of the smell of summer?

Dust invades your nostrils as you stroll through the August heat,

overripe pollen of oak, maple and ash fills your eyes, and you rub seeking to abate the itch

to no avail.

The heat mirage drifts above the tarmac and the distant clouds are Himalayan peaks.

Sweat drips from your chin while the unmistakable lake bouquet permeates like the rich odors of a Turkish kiosk.

The mountains approach with jagged ribbons as thunder shakes the ground and birds flee,

and God dumps a bucket of water on the parched earth beating down the pollen and tarmac mirage.

Trees drip with the pitter-patter of the deluge past, while the senses fill with the sweet fragrance of alfalfa,

Immersion in the perfume of fresh earth, washed leaves, and rejuvenated lakes.

Have you made note of the smell of summer?
